New Events Highlight Ozarks' Alumni Weekend '99

Release Date: 3/15/1999

Clarksville, Ark. ---Several new events, including a reunion of business majors, will highlight this year's University of the Ozarks Alumni Weekend '99, scheduled for April 16-18 on the Ozarks campus.

The theme for this year's Alumni Weekend is "Helping to Fulfill the Promise," which ties into Ozarks President Dr. Rick Niece's theme of ''PROMISE'' for the 1998-99 academic year.

Along with the traditional events such as a golf tournament, picnic, 5K Run/Walk, President's Reception and Awards Banquet, Alumni Weekend '99 will showcase several new events that organizers hope will offer more interaction opportunities and variety to the annual affair. The new events include a reunion for alumni who went through Ozarks' business program, an alumni/student dance, a University Cabaret and an alumni basketball game.

''We were looking for ways to add some different events to the weekend that would help us get better participation and we think these will do that,'' said Lori McBee, director of alumni relations.

One of the events that has received a lot of interest is the business majors reunion, which will be held at Dr. Randy Hilton's home from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, April 16. The reunion is open to all Ozarks business graduates as well as current seniors in the division.

''We think this is a great way for our business graduates to come back and see old friends, visit with some of their former professors and get caught up on what is happening currently with the business division,'' said Hilton, who is the chairman of the Division of Business, Communications and Government. ''We're inviting anyone who has gone through the program to come back and enjoy an evening of fellowship.''

McBee said she would like to see the divisional and departmental reunions become an annual part of Alumni Weekend. Plans are already underway for a reunion next year of Ozarks' former pharmacy school.
''In the past we've had reunions of particular classes. The division reunions have been suggested by many people because of the relationships that are built during classes and study groups," McBee said. ''It's something we're going to try and see how it works.''

Another new event is the alumni/student dance at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 17, in the Seay Student Center.

''We wanted an event where our alumni and current students could mingle and network,'' said McBee. ''A DJ will be there playing all types of music, from the 1960s through the 90s.''

The University Cabaret, scheduled for Friday evening in the Seay Student Center, is sponsored by the Theatre Department and will feature U of O students, faculty and staff in a variety of entertainment presentations. There is no charge for this event. Dessert and coffee will be available for purchase.

The alumni basketball event, scheduled from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, will feature both a men's and a women's game that will pit alumni vs. alumni.

The golf tournament, a four-person scramble format being held at the Clarksville Country Club on Friday, April 16, begins with registration at 8 a.m. At least one person in each foursome must be an Ozarks alumnus, employee or student. Cost for the golf tournament is $30 per person and includes lunch.

The 5K Run/Walk will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday in the Mabee Gym parking lot. The cost to enter the race is $10 and includes an Alumni Weekend T-shirt.
