Release Date: 10/17/2013
University of the Ozarks will offer a pair of on-campus events in the spirit of Halloween for the Clarksville community on Monday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 29.
U of O Professor of Music and Organist Dr. Sharon Gorman will present her 12th annual Halloween organ concert at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28 in Munger Memorial Chapel. Also, the annual Residential Hall Association Haunted Housing for children 12-and-under will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. Both events are free and open to the general public.
This year's concert has been renamed the "All Hallows Eve Concert" in order to connect it more closely with its traditional medieval roots as a pre-All Saints Day festival. The popular concert will continue to feature the same fun music suitable for audiences of all ages. As in previous years, attendees are invited to come in costume.
This year's music includes selections for Disney princesses from Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Pocahontas and Aladdin, along with the customary "Phantom of the Opera" Bach toccata, Harry Potter pieces and music for hobbits, dwarves, worms and Valkyrie. Gorman will be at the organ and piano, joined by the University Chamber Singers.
Gorman came to U of O in 1996 from northern California, where she taught at Cogswell College in Sunnyvale, Calif., and served as director of music at Grace Lutheran Church in San Jose, Calif. She holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Stanford University as well as two organ performance degrees from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. Her formal training also includes private keyboard studies in northern Germany with Harald Vogel, a specialist in Baroque keyboard music.
The Haunted Housing event will include trick-or-treating tours of several of the university's residential halls. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes and parents can accompany their children on the tours. The escorted tours of the Halloween-decorated halls will begin in the Rogers Conference Center. The candy that will be passed out by students will be purchased by U of O officials. For more information on the Haunted Housing, please call the Student Life Office at 979-1322.
