Clarksville, Ark. --- University of the Ozarks Theatre will present "Aesop: Fables For Our Time" at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Walton Fine Arts Center on campus.
U of O theatre professor Dr. Pat Farmer, the play's director, adapted the fables into a story theatre format, based upon his experiences at the Institute for Readers Theatre International Workshop in London this past summer. The play centers around Aesop, a Greek story-teller who lived in the sixth century BC, and how such internationally familiar phrases such as "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched," and "Sour grapes," became a part of our world.
"The fables are fundamentally dramatic, and adapting them into a story theatre format provides both actors and audiences alike with an exciting evening of entertainment," Farmer said.
Scenic designer Trillian, the crew and Dr. Farmer collaborated on a multifunctional playground set on which the seven cast members roll, climb, slide, and jump as they portray more than 60 different characters. The cast includes Jennifer Kreienheder, Megann McManus, Cooper Mann, Chad J. Cox, Jason Wakefield, Jennifer Cozens and Rana Peters. Designers include Trillian, scenic and lighting; Cozens, costumes; Rachel Pickett, graphics; and Jennifer Penka, sound.
The crew also includes Penka, stage manager; Amberly Mouser, sound board operator; Trillian, light board operator; Katari Hawthorne, props run crew; C.J. Ellis, dresser/wardrobe run crew; Desiree Goetz, box office manager; Pickett, house manager; and Professor Bruce Brown, technical director.
Tickets for the Oct. 17 production are $3 and can be reserved by calling (501) 979-1349. U of O Theatre is also performing five matinees of "Aesop: Fables For Our Time" for area elementary schools Oct. 14-16.
