In 2001, a new entryway plaza was constructed on the east side of the campus mall. The new plaza, located between Walker Hall and the Seay Student Center, features a 40-foot flagpole that displays a large and majestic United States flag. As University President Dr. Rick Niece noted when he announced plans to construct the plaza, the visual image seen by people entering the campus is an impressive one with the flag in the foreground and the Chapel in the background. Ozarks' traditions of patriotism and spirituality — two cherished embodiments of the campus community — are perfectly framed by the new plaza, which also contains a lighted map of the campus, four benches on the perimeter, and a circular red granite inlay of the Ozarks’ emblem. A plaque located in the plaza commemorates the late Dr. Alvin Broyles, an Ozarks alum and Board of Trustee member, whose generosity provided funds to construct the new entryway.
