  • Manage operating budgets totaling in excess of $7,000,000.
  • Responsible for the writing of financial aid policies that award $25,000,000 in institutional aid.

  • Served as Chief Judicial Officer for the University.
  • Served as the Chief Housing Officer for 10 traditional residence halls, two university owned apartment buildings, and 13 privately owned apartment buildings totaling 1553 beds.
  • Supervised 10 full-time professional staff, seven support staff and 150-plus paraprofessional student staff working in a variety of student life functions including residence life, student programs, orientation, health and counseling services and facilities management.
  • Coordinated University response to crises involving students.

Associate Dean of Student Life and Academic Development (February 1996 to June 1999)

  • Managed an annual budget in excess of $3,800,000.
  • Served as Chief Judicial Officer for the University.
  • Served on five-member University Enrollment Management Team responsible for managing student admission, enrollment, net-tuition revenue and policies related to financial aid.
  • Served on a team that oversaw design and construction of a 210-bed state-of-the-art residential facility.
  • Supervised seven professional staff, five support staff, and 100-plus paraprofessional student staff working in a variety of student life functions including multicultural affairs, student activities, residence life and facilities management.

Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life (January 1995 to February 1996)

  • Managed an annual budget in excess of $2,600,000.
  • Administered procedures and systems to manage residence halls including assigning rooms, distributing keys, and serving as a liaison to maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Designed and implemented training and professional development for professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Created and implemented living-learning communities in 12 residential facilities.
  • Served as appellate officer in judicial cases.
  • Supervised five professional staff and 34 paraprofessional student staff.

Assistant Director of Student Activities/Director of Greek Life (August 1994 to January 1995)

  • Advised the student programming board with an annual budget of $70,000.
  • Trained new staff members in all areas of student activities, facilities management and university culture.
  • Advised seven fraternities, four sororities, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and two National Honorary Societies.

Resident Director (August 1991 to August 1994)

  • Provided disciplinary and personal counseling for approximately 250 residents in a traditional residence hall, four co-educational halls and two apartment buildings.
  • Served as the primary adjudicator for the Department of Residence Life.
  • Monitored students’ academic and social development.
  • Served as a programming resource for staff members and campus community.
  • Designed and implemented quality training and development workshops for 35 paraprofessionals.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

MILLIKIN UNIVERSITY, Decatur, Illinois

Communication: Leadership and Conflict Mediation

  • Co-designed and piloted the University’s first 10 day, three-credit winter immersion course.
  • Taught as an interdisciplinary Senior Seminar for 25 students.
  • Assisted with the logistical development of winter term.

Criminal Justice: Illinois Juvenile Court Act

  • The course explores the development of the Illinois Juvenile Court Act and the impact of the criminal justice system on children and families.
  • Designed for the adult student in an accelerated format.

English: Critical Reading Writing Research I and II

  • Developed and taught introductory writing and research course for students who were new to the University or repeating the course requirement.
  • Created plans of study, customized to individual student needs.
  • Designed as highly experiential, highly reflective and intended to teach lifelong skills in academic exploration.
  • Encouraged independent research.

General Studies: University Senior Capstone

  • Team taught three credit culminating course in university general education curriculum.
  • Designed course to be highly experiential addressing personal development and transitional topics.

General Studies: University Orientation

  • Co-designed and implemented eight-week credit-bearing orientation/leadership courses.
  • Designed training workshop for Peer Facilitators and Student Assistants.
  • Assisted new students in adjustment to University life via academic and personal counseling.

General Studies: University Seminar

  • Taught a First Year University Seminar as one of two required courses in a nationally recognized curriculum.
  • Designed the course to explore identity development through studying race, socioeconomic status and gender.
  • Supervised and advised two student teaching assistants.

Political Science: The American Political System

  • The course introduces students to the ways that political scientists study the actors, networks, institutions, and policies that form the framework of American politics.
  • Designed the course to create more informed citizens and voters and prepare students to apply political science beyond the classroom.

Political Science: Law and Justice: Creating Social Change

  • The course examines the role the law has played in developing the legal identity of specific groups in the United States.
  • Designed the course to allow students to focus on developing research and collaboration skills, while understanding historical and contemporary frameworks of critical issues in the United States political system.

College of Law Clinic
(August 2001 to May 2002)

  • Represented indigent clients in orders of protection, divorce, debt payment and landlordtenant disputes. Responsibilities included interviewing, fact finding, counseling, negotiating, drafting legal documents and appearing in court.
  • Researched and developed all components of litigation under the supervision of an attorney.
  • Trained as a mediator for landlord-tenant and small claims cases.
  • Assisted in the development of the Community Mediation Project for the Champaign County Court system.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY, Carbondale, Illinois
Alternative Dispute Resolution Clinic

  • Conducted conflict resolution training for area middle school teachers and students.
  • Researched and developed age-appropriate curriculum for elementary students.
